Poem: After Us

After Us

Who will bring you sorrow's bread
when the wanton all are wed
when the poets all are dead
like the lighthouse keeper's song
silent all the summer long.

Who will bring you comfort's ale
when we're all beyond the pale
when the seas, bereft of sail,
whisper to a lover gone
whisper of the lighthouse song.

Who will hold belonging's hand
when you're footless on the sand
and witless wanders on, the strand,
lighthouse dark and river long
in the silence of the song.
