The word 'homophobia' is generally used these days to refer to a hatred of gay people or discrimination against them. But what is far more widespread is a fear, not of gay people, but of being mistaken for one. During a recent investigation into police personel using a seance as an investigatory method we are told:

The officers had held hands, although not in an "affectionate" way.
